Rx for Happiness. Start Accepting Compliments

Posted by Kristin Baird

How do you react when someone compliments you? After the polite thank you, how do you really process the compliment? If you’re like many people, you may dismiss it and move on without allowing the words to stick. That’s a shame because failing to accept compliments could be robbing you of valuable reinforcement or mental fuel to get you through tough times.

Caregivers often put their hearts and souls into their work. Yet when patients thank and compliment them, they skim over their words as a perfunctory exchange. That dismissiveness isn’t helping your connection to purpose or your mental health.

Let It Sink In

Stop and let the compliment sink in. Listen to what the patient is saying and really take it in. Let it register in your brain and consciously accept it.

The next time a patient says something like, “Thank you for your help. You’ve been so kind.” Don’t write it off. Tell them they are welcome and make a mental note that you are appreciated. Remind yourself that you’ve made a difference. Let yourself feel the gratitude. Each time you do, you’re adding fuel to your soul and feeding your sense of purpose.
