Bring Your Purpose to Work

Posted by Kristin Baird

Mark Twain said, “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.”  Finding your “why” is finding your purpose. I find that having a clear connection is a driving force for many healthcare professionals. It’s not uncommon to hear that people chose healthcare occupations because they want to help others. That is often their first step in connecting.

The Unique Challenge

Leaders have a unique challenge when it comes to connection to purpose. First, they must look within to define it, and second, they must become adept at helping others to find theirs. This happens when healthcare leaders share the big picture of what the organization stands for, then connects the work of each individual to that purpose. When this is done well, you won’t find housekeepers who see their jobs as mopping floors, but rather as the keepers of infection control or the keepers of the first impression.

When workers are connected to purpose they feel a part of something worthwhile. They know their work is important.
