Every day, millions of nurses are interacting with people of all walks of life. And chances are, they’re leaving lasting impressions of compassion, kindness and competence. How do I know this? I ask people to share their stories. They tell stories of nurses going above and beyond. They tell stories of kindness and compassion. They tell stories about empathy and trust. Even though nurses won’t remember each patient that crosses their paths, chances are, the patient and family will. It’s no wonder that they rank as the most trusted profession each year that Gallup conducts its research.
I was reminded of the importance of great nursing this week as I accompanied my daughter through her labor and delivery. They were not only kind and compassionate, they were knowledgeable and extremely competent in their professional skills. None of us will ever forget them.
Nursing is one of the most demanding, yet fulfilling professions in the world. And as we face a dire nurse shortage, it’s my hope that we, as a profession, will continue to attract the brightest and most caring individuals into the profession. Happy Nurse’s Week to my fellow nurses.
