One of my favorite things to do is to work with stellar performers. It’s been part of my model now for over 15 years to identify and then engage the organizations service stars in designing or refining their service excellence standards. When I am working with stellar performers I am continually inspired and am reaffirmed that healthcare is in competent hands. Medical expertise when placed in the hands of the most compassionate and caring individuals is a recipe for success in both outcomes and experience.
Just a few weeks ago, I was having a group discussion with some stellar performers whose stories brought me to tears. Their connection to purpose was clear and their compassion for both their patients and co-workers was exemplary. After speaking with them, I met with their leaders to share findings from some research we had done. During that presentation I shared some of the stories I had heard from their stellar performers. These leaders were moved to tears as well. Some had no idea of the work that was being done on the front lines.
After my presentation, one of the managers approached me and thanked me for sharing the stories and recognizing her staff. She told me how I had inspired her and was looking forward to hearing me speak again. Although it’s an honor to know that I could inspire them from the podium, the real stories are right under their noses. So I shared my secret sauce for staying inspired. Get out of your office. Walk around. Look and listen. Then give recognition and share the stories. Not only will you feed your own passion, you’ll be modeling and inspiring others. Pass it on!
